Buy hoyo de monterrey cigars online, Don Jose Gener emigrated to Cuba from Spain at the age of thirteen where he worked on his uncles plantation in Vuelta Abajo. 20 years later in 1865, after opening a successful factory in Havana, he purchased one of the best tobacco farms in Vuelta Abajo and registered his new cigar brand, Hoyo de Monterrey. The word Hoyo literally means ‘hole’ and refers directly to the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez River. The Hoyo de Monterrey plantation can be accessed through the gates in the main square of the town San Juan y Martinez which is in the heart of the Vuelta Abajo region, inscribed on these gates is the phrase ‘Hoyo de Monterrey. When Gener died in 1900 he handed control of the business over to his daughter Lutgarda Gener who kept it in the family for a further 30 years. In 1931, in order to focus on their sugar cane business, the Gener family sold their cigar brands Hoyo de Monterrey La Escepción to the firm of Fernández, Palicio y Cía who already owned other cigar brands such as Punch. After the death of partner Ramón Fernández, Fernando Palicio became sole proprietor of the business and by 1958 his cigar lines accounted for 13% of all Havana cigar exports.
The Hoyo de Monterrey brand is best known for lighter tasting cigars with an elegant complexity, delicate yet aromatic, these characteristics can be found in their famous double corona vitola and epicure series. They were also the first to introduce the Petit Robusto size in 2005, a cigar for people who like a larger ring gauge but with little time to smoke a full sized robusto. All sizes are tripa larga, totalmente a mano – long filler, totally hand made using tobacco from the vuelta abajo region.
